[06/05/2010] Garmin Forerunner 405

If you liked the Garmin Forerunner 305, you are simply going to love the Garmin Forerunner 405 – it is lighter, with improved design and circular display, only two buttons, and packed with great features.

The most noticeable change is the replacement of the rather large rectangular display with a circular one, which makes the Garmin Forerunner 405 look and feel like a normal wristwatch. The multitude of buttons is replaced by a bezel and there are only two buttons on the right side of the watch; the rechargeable lithium-ion battery lasts for eight hours and the watch is lighter. It comes in two different colors – light green and black and the design is quite sleek.

As expected, the Garmin Forerunner 405 measures your distance, pace, time and calories burned; it also works as a very accurate heart-rate monitor, when used in conjunction with the heart-rate chest strap. Of course, combining all these data with your precise location at any time is what makes this device great; the high-sensitivity GOS receiver allows for great satellite connectivity and a signal that is almost never lost when outdoors.

The bezel replaces quite a few buttons from the previous model and tapping it makes switching between screens a breeze, while scrolling allows you to navigate through the different functions. The Garmin Forerunner 405 comes with more than enough memory that allows you to store an impressive amount of data, but what is even greater is the ability to share this data wirelessly with any other ready device. This means that you can easily upload or download data from your computer or exchange routes and workouts with your friends that wear the same watch, all this thanks to the utilization of the ANT+ technology.

The Garmin Forerunner 405 also comes with optional foot pod, which permits cross-training; you can use the device for indoor training, where the GPS signal cannot be received – simply use the foot pod and you can keep track of all your data and progress.

If you want to run in-depth analysis of your training sessions and workouts, then you should be glad to know that Garmin Forerunner 405 works seamlessly with the Garmin Training Center software.

The Garmin Forerunner 405 is a device, packed with serious features that allow professional and amateur athletes and sport enthusiasts to make the most of their workouts.

[26/07/2010] Garmin GPS Forerunner 405 black

Our Review

The Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS is a device that is made to function well, look good and impress every fitness and sport enthusiast; this model is a vast improvement from the previous series in almost any way – much lighter and looking and feeling almost like a regular watch, with better GPS connection and improved functionality.

The watch comes in two different versions – one for gents and one for ladies and is amazingly light, although still a touch bulkier than a regular wristwatch. The buttons that you could find in previous models are replaced by a touch bezel, which is used to control almost anything – the bezel is quite sensitive and gets some time getting used to, but once you master it, it is a smooth sailing. The Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS watch weighs only 2.1 oz (or 60g), gets powered by one rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts for eight hours when in GPS mode and more than two weeks in power-save mode. The full kit includes the waterproof watch, a heart-rate chest strap and an ANT USB-stick; what is new is the way the watch communicates with other devices – it does it wirelessly. This might not seem like something extraordinary, but in fact it is since allows you to transfer data to any ready device in a matter of seconds and that means that you can compare workouts with friends instantly.

The watch is Garmin Connect and Garmin Training Center compatible, which again allows you to transfer, share, and analyze your data online. As expected, it measures all the necessary data like speed, distance, and heart rate; and when it comes to GPS, with the help of a really sensitive receiver it tracks your location almost instantly and really effortlessly – it locks to a satellite seconds after it is powered up and keeps the connection even when walking or jogging in the woods or in the urban jungle. Other features that we have seen in previous models, like the Virtual Partner, are present in the Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS as well.
